Overview – Create and edit a survey

Table of contents

What is the Create and Edit menu?

This menu is the first thing you will see when creating a new survey, or if you are accessing the edit mode of an existing one. In this view, you are able to add, edit and update questions, as well as add an introduction and end text to your survey. You can also access survey settings and distribution options from this menu.

Here is an example of how the menu will look for a survey with existing questions:

How do I access the menu?

To access the Create and Edit mode of your survey there are two options:

    • You will need to create a new survey or copy an existing one. When you have created/copied the survey you will be forwarded directly to the create and edit module.
    • You can access it from the “See results or edit survey” overview by clicking “Click here to edit this survey” on the right side, under the options for that specific survey (marked in the red square on the image below).

What can I do in the Create and Edit menu?

The Create and Edit menu is the main area where you will work on your survey. You will be able to add questions, pages and navigate your way through the questionnaire in an editable format. There will be a bar of buttons at the top of the screen displaying the number of pages that you have added to your survey with”Introduction” and “End text” flanking them.

Adding pages: If you want to add additional pages, you can click the plus icon. The newly created page will always be empty and placed last in the page order.

Change page order: In order to reorder pages, you will need to click the page in the top bar to mark it, and then press one of the arrows attached to the page number. Click the left arrow to move the page one spot towards the start of the survey or click the right arrow to move the page one spot towards the end of the survey.

You can also simply drag and drop the page icons to reorder them.

Remove a page: To remove a specific page you will need to be in the grey header area (where it says “Background questions” in the screenshot above). In this area, you will have two buttons located at the far right side of the screen. Click the trash can icon (marked with a red square in the screenshot below) and you will get a question asking “Are you sure you want to delete this question and all the mechanisms in the question?”. Answer “Yes” and the page, including all questions and text, will be permanently deleted from your survey. If you change your mind or delete in error, select “Cancel” and you will go back to your questionnaire without removing anything.

Create question: You can create and add new questions to your survey. To do this you click the option in the menu on the left side of the screen, it will be added as the last question at the bottom of the page you are currently editing. Read more about the different question types here.

Remove a question: To remove an individual question from a page you will need to be on the specific question that you wish to remove. In this area, you will have four buttons located at the far right side of the screen. Click the trash can icon (marked with a red square in the screenshot below) and you will get a question asking “Are you sure you want to delete this mechanism?”. Answer “Yes” and the question will be permanently deleted from your survey. If you change your mind or miss-clicked, select “Cancel” and you will go back to your questionnaire without removing anything.

Move question: To change the order of the question you will need to be on the specific question that you wish to move. At the far right of the screen, you will have a number of arrows (marked in green in the screenshot above). Click these in order to move the question in the order on the page.

Move the question to the top of the page.

Move the question up one spot in the question order of the page.

Move the question down one spot in the question order of the page.

Move the question to the bottom of the page.

If you want to move a question to another page, go to the “ALL” tab and drag and drop questions to the desired location.

Where do I go from here?

When you have completed the creation of your survey questions, the natural step is to move on to the Distributionpart of the survey creation process. You can always go back to the “Edit” mode should you need to change or update one or some of the questions.
